Worker’s Compensation
The board was briefed on the
status of the worker’s compensation bill. The portion of the 2003 proposals
dealing with cost containment has not been completed. It is expected this will
occur at the June 16th meeting. The council has given preliminary
approval that would significantly improve the problem with WC carriers that are
raising liability as a defense to case the case out of the Necessity of
Treatment Dispute Process. This proposal awaits final approval along with the
rest of the package.
Dentist Lawsuit
The board discussed a lawsuit
brought by dentists against the insurance company claiming fraud in the
determination of reimbursement rate. This lawsuit was brought by the dentist’s
national trade association. Because lawsuits of this nature cost a minimum of
$500,000, the WCA cannot consider a lawsuit of this nature on behalf of its
members.
Stroke Study
The board discussed the
recently released stroke study and the attendant news coverage. It does not
appear this limited study has had any impact on the profession.
PACE
The board discussed the
Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards (FCLB) creation of a service
entitled Providers of Approved Continuing Education (PACE).
According to the FCLB, PACE
is necessary “to develop a uniform approval process designed to streamline the
recognition process for providers seeking board approval for their CE programs.
In addition, PACE offers the chiropractic community an efficient mechanism to
select their continuing education hours with confidence of compliance with
uniform requirements”. The WCA strongly disagrees with the concept of PACE, as
it is now envisioned, because it adds significant cost to continuing education
without the fundamental reforms necessary to insure the integrity of
chiropractic continuing education.
